Search Help
Basic search
Simply enter the word you wish to find and the search engine will seek out every instance of the word in these nine documents. For example: treaty. All instances of the use of the word treaty will show up on the search results page.
Wildcard search
Using a wildcard (*) will increase the odds of finding the results you are seeking. For example: treat*. The search results will display every instance of treat, treated, treaties, treatment, treaty, etc. More than one wildcard may be used. For example: *reat* yields great, greater, greatest, greatly, treated, treaties, and treaty, among others.
Capitalization
Searches are not case sensitive. For example: six nation* will produce the same results as Six Nation*.
Phrase search
Searching for a specific phrase may help narrow down the results. Long phrases are no problem. For example: King's Right to all the Lands appears in ratified treaty # 3 and 4.
Subsequent searches
Because of the spellings used by the treaty recorders, it may be necessary to try your search multiple times. For example: on*d* yields Onandago, Ondaghsighte (a sachim of the Oneida noted in ratified treaty # 1), Oneida, Oneido, Onejda, Onnondage, and Onondaga, among others. A search for ono* locates the entire Onondaga series of Onondaga, Onondagas, Onondages, and Onondago.
